What Causes Buffer During Streaming?

The reason you buffer in Kodi is because the steam cannot download fast enough to continuously play it on your Android Box. This is because your internet is too slow or the host the video file is stored on is not fast enough to give you a continuous stream.

Note that no matter whether you follow the instructions in this guide or not, we recommend a minimum internet speed of 5mb/s or greater.

Free hosts especially like to throttle speeds to send you media as slow as possible to save bandwidth.

By following the steps in the rest of this guide below, you’ll at least minimize your Android TV box as being the problem.

How to Prevent Buffering in Kodi

Before we show you two advanced tools for preventing Kodi buffer, there are a few key things you should make sure of on your end. Without these things, you will forever find buffering and stuttering when streaming media.

1. Make sure your internet speed is fast enough

In 2019, we recommend a minimum internet download speed of 5 mb/s from your service provider in order to reduce buffering issues.

If your service provider throttles your speed or isn’t offering you fast enough service, you need to get this taken care of before you stream anything in Kodi.

2. Make sure your internet connection is hard-wired

This is a mandatory for reducing Kodi buffer issues. You are only guaranteed the advertised internet speed from your provider if you are hard-wiring your Kodi box to your router.

Even if you think your wireless connection should be fast enough, it won’t be to handle HD video.

Latency on wi-fi is 10x or worse than hard-wiring your connection. This means that even if your initial download speed is high enough, wi-fi can’t process an incoming video stream as fast as wired.

The extra latency in your connection will lead to buffer issues.

3. Consider using a premium file host service

Sometimes your Kodi buffer problem is the fault of free file hosts not giving you enough bandwidth to stream a file. This is not a fault of your own and there is nothing you can do other than try a different host.

Consider signing up for a premium file host service like Real Debrid, which gives you unrestricted access to some premium file hosts.

With Real Debrid, you will guaranteed see more links inside of Kodi and less issues!

How to Fix Kodi Buffer Issues

We are going to use the TT Buffer Fix Kodi addon to help us stop buffering in Kodi. TT Buffer Fix is a modified version of the old “Easy Advanced Settings” addon which has been updated and rebuilt for compatibility with newer versions of Kodi.

How to Install TT Buffer Fix Kodi Addon – Standard Method

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to SYSTEM > File Manager > Add Source > None
2. Type the following EXACTLY http://toptutorialsrepo.co.uk/kodi and select Done
3. Highlight the box underneath and enter a name for this media Source like ttr and then click OK
4. Go back to your home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser

How to Stop Buffering in Kodi – General Settings

All Kodi boxes are slightly different and require some manual input to minimize buffering. However, if you don’t have the time to go through and calculate what numbers you need to input, there are some general settings you can input below.

From within the TT Buffer Fix Kodi addon, you’ll want to go into the Edit Settings screen and then click on Network Settings. Click on Cache.

The three settings that need to be changed in the Cache screen are the memorysize, buffermode, and readfactor.

1. Change the memorysize value to 419430400. This is a file size in bytes corresponding to how big we will allow the memory that stores our media file as it loads to get. If you have a high RAM device (2gb or 3gb), this number can be increased according to the custom settings below.
2. Change the buffermode value to 1. This will buffer and load all streams that we pass through the Kodi media interface.
3. Change the readfactor value to 4.0. This will increase the buffer readrate which can help keep your cache file filled up if you have a bad internet connection.

Go back three screens (the two dots) to the main menu of the TT Buffer Fix addon and then click on Write XML File. This creates a file in the Kodi directory on your box that contains the settings you just configured above.

If you click on read advancedsettings.xml, it should show you your XML file including the file settings you just configured above.

How to Stop Buffering in Kodi – Customized Settings

To further improve your setup and stop buffering in Kodi, we can manually calculate our settings to input in the TT Buffer Fix Kodi addon. These settings are custom to whatever Kodi box you have, so make sure you know the specifications of your box.

Memory Size Value

The memory buffer size on your box uses three times (3x) the value of the number you enter into your memorysize value. Your buffer size is based off of how much RAM is free on your box while Kodi is running. To find this number:

1. Go back to your Kodi home screen and then launch the Settings screen.
2. Go to the System Information page.
3. Under the summary tab, note the number beside Free Memory and write this number down. You’ll want to use a slightly lower number in your calculations, so if you have 2350mb, use 2200mb in your calculations. The calculation you want to make is:
   1. Free memory / 3 x 1024 x 1024
4. So, take your free memory number (2200mb in this case) and divide by 3 because Kodi will use 3x your total value. Then, multiply by 1024 to convert megabytes (mb) into kilobytes (kb). Multiply by 1024 to convert your kb into bytes, which is the format your number needs to be in. Write down your calculated value and keep it safe. If you used 2200mb for example, your end number in bytes is 768,955,733.

Head back into the TT Buffer Fix Kodi addon, go into the Edit Settings screen and then click on Network Settings. Click on Cache.

The three settings that need to be changed in the Cache screen are the memorysize, buffermode, and readfactor.

1. Change the memorysize value to the number you calculated above (768955733 in our case). This is a file size in bytes corresponding to how big we will allow the memory that stores our media file as it loads to get.
2. Change the buffermode value to 1. This will buffer and load all streams that we pass through the Kodi media interface.
3. Change the readfactor value to 4.0. This will increase the buffer readrate which can help keep your cache file filled up if you have a bad internet connection.

Go back three screens (the two dots) to the main menu of the TT Buffer Fix addon and then click on Write XML File. This creates a file in the Kodi directory on your box that contains the settings you just configured above.

Next, restart your Kodi box so that it can load your new settings. Hopefully, this will help you stop buffering in Kodi.

Note that these results will help you out more with static video streams such as movies and TV shows. Free live IPTV streams are generally just too slow to be helped by these settings and there is no action you can take that will help you out.

Originally developed by Lambda, Exodus has been forked a countless number of times with tons of replacements. In 2019, the Kodi Exodus code remains largely the same with a few key additions and changes.

What is Kodi Exodus?

Exodus is an open source set of code created by the developer Lambda that integrates three major components together:

1. The Scraper
2. The Resolver
3. The Search Engine

The actual Exodus addon (including Exodus Redux and other addons) is the search engine. It’s job is to search and query movie and TV titles. In the case of Exodus, it uses Trakt, TMDB, and TVDM databases to present movies and titles in playlists such as “most popular” or “trending movies”.

When you search a title in the Kodi Exodus addon, it searches through scrapers, which are websites on the internet that contain links to media files.

In the initial version of Exodus, these scrapers were local to the addon. Nowadays, some community scraper projects exist such as Universal Scrapers and Civitas Scrapers. Community scrapers can be updated and then all addons using those scrapers receive the same updates.

But anyway, back to Exodus!

After you search, Exodus shows you a list of media file. The one you pick to play is passed off to a resolver. The resolver module in Exodus is URLResolver, which is a collection of instructions on how to navigate through file hosts to get out the raw video file.

The resolver passes Kodi a media file that plays on your Kodi hardware.

Kodi Exodus Features

All versions of Exodus come with the following features:

Latest Kodi Exodus Update

The original Exodus addon has not been maintained by Lambda since early 2017 when Lambda retired as a developer from the community.

That doesn’t mean that the legacy of Exodus doesn’t live on though!

Today, there are two recommended forks of the Exodus addon that live on and are under development.

Kodi Exodus Kodibae Version

The Kodibae repository is a mysterious Github repo that updates the code of addons formally created and maintained by TVAddons. TVAddons is currently involved in a court case in Canada over the legality of its addons and does not host any grey-area content.

The Kodibae developer keeps some of the original TVA addons up to date, including Exodus. This version of Exodus is largely the same as the original release and it updates every few months with some new scrapers updates to check out.

Exodus Redux Kodi Addon

Exodus Redux is a popular fork of the original Exodus addon. It makes some key changes to the code base:

• The resolver has been changed from URLResolver to ResolveURL, which receives more regular updates.
• The scraper module has changed from local to the LambdaScrapers community codebase.

LambdaScrapers itself is not actively maintained as of 2019, but there are hopes that a new update will be coming soon to support the next generation Civitas Scrapers.

How to Install Kodi Exodus Add-on

Kodibae Exodus

1. Click here to download the Kodi Bae Repository.
2. From your Kodi home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
3. Select Install from Zip File > Select the repository.kodibae.x.x.x.zip file you downloaded above and wait for the Add-on enabled notification
4. Select Install from Repository > Kodi Bae repository > Video Add-ons > Exodus > Install
5. Wait for Add-on enabled notification

Exodus Redux

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to SYSTEM > File Manager > Add Source > None
2. Type the following EXACTLY https://i-a-c.github.io/repo/ and select Done
3. Highlight the box underneath and enter a name for this media Source like .redux. and then click OK
4. Go back to your home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
5. Select Install from Zip File > .redux > repository.exodusredux-x.x.x.zip and wait for the Add-on enabled notification
6. Select Install from Repository > Exodus Redux Repo > Video Add-ons > Exodus Redux > Install
7. Wait for Add-on enabled notification

Exodus Redux FireDL Method

If you are using hardware that is hard or inconvenient to download and move zip files onto, you can use FireDL to get the Exodus Redux repo! FireDL is a tool that hides zip file links behind a code and as long as you know that code, you can get any app or addon you want.

First, download the FireDL app onto your Android, Nvidia, or Amazon hardware and then follow the steps below.

1. Launch the FireDL app.
2. Enter in the shortcode 882887 and click the download button.
3. The Exodus Redux repo zip file will be downloaded onto your device.
4. Launch Kodi. From your home screen:
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
5. Select Install from Zip File > external storage > Downloads > repository.exodusredux.zip and wait for the Add-on enabled notification. If the path above is not 100% correct, you will have to do a little searching until you find the Downloads folder that FireDL downloaded the zip file to.
6. Select Install from Repository > Exodus Redux repository > Video Add-ons > Exodus Redux > Install
7. Wait for Add-on enabled notification

How to Setup / Configure Exodus Redux Addon

Lambda Scrapers should be enabled by default. To double-check whether Lambda Scrapers is enabled, follow these instructions:

1. From the Home Menu, go to Tools > SETTINGS: Providers
2. “Choose Module Provider Source” should be set to “Lambda Scrapers”
3. Open Lambda Scrapers Settings
4. In the “Providers” section, Lambdascrapers should be selected from the “Choose Module Scraper” pull-down menu.
5. In the “Providers”, “Foreign” and “Debrid” (if using a debrid service) sections, you can also enable/disable specific providers. If you want to use a different Module Scraper
6. In the “Providers” section, select the scraper set you want to use from the “Choose Module Scraper” pull-down menu.
7. In the “Providers” section, select “Enable ALL Providers(for current Module)”. This enables all providers for the current module in addition to any previously enabled providers. Note: “Foreign” and “Debrid” are only available with Lambdascrapers

Tip: Before selecting “Lambda Scrapers Default Providers”, it is a good idea to “Disable All Providers” first.

Tip: When switching Module Scrapers it is good idea to “Disable All Providers” first.

Kodi Exodus Not Working Help

If the Exodus addon is not working for you, it can be frustrating!

Kodi Exodus No Stream Available Fix

“No Stream Available” is a common Kodi error that most users will run into. There is a common misconception about Kodi addons you must first understand before we talk about how to fix this error:

• If I see a title in Exodus, a stream must be available for it.

This is NOT true! Titles in Kodi are pulled from a service like Trakt or IMDB. If a movie is not released yet or is really old, there may not be any streams available and no troubleshooting will fix this.

If you are certain that a stream should be available for a title, you need to make sure that your scrapers are setup and working. Refer to the steps above in this guide on how to make sure your scrapers are working in the Exodus settings.

Try restarting the Kodi Exodus addon or Exodus Redux addon again. Try installing Kodi from scratch with NO build and this will most likely solve your problems.

How to Authorize Trakt in Exodus Redux

If you are a Trakt user and store your movies and TV data in that service, you can sync your account by launching Exodus Redux and going to Tools > Authorize Trakt. Follow the prompts on the screen to sync your account accordingly.

• Watching old content in Exodus – The Exodus Kodi addon searches the public internet for media. The older and more obscure the content is, the less likely it is available on the internet. There is nothing you can do about this. A private usenet server, such as Easynews, is the best way to view old and obscure content.
• Seeing more streams in Exodus – Some users want to watch new content but still have trouble. Here are some common tips to improve your experience:
  • If its a movie you want information on, make sure it is out on DVD. If the movie has just come out in theatres, stop searching Exodus for anything.
  • If you live in the UK, your internet service provider may be blocking access to over half the available content in Exodus. Click here for more information.
  • If you have an Android TV box, make sure your OS version is AT LEAST 5+. The Exodus Kodi addon is not supported on Android 4.4
  • Make sure that you have at least Kodi 17.0 or greater (latest version is always preferred). Exodus is not supported on Kodi 16 or less.
• Seeing only trailers in Exodus – If you commonly only see trailers when looking for streams in Exodus, click here.

Kodi Scrapers are pieces of open-source code that can query websites on the public internet that contain media files and links. The new Civitas Scrapers Kodi module is a community project to keep scrapers up to date and in one spot for all.

Our guide below outlines Civitas Scrapers, how to install it, and why it is useful.

The Need For Civitas Scrapers

Civitas Scrapers was created from the former LambdaScrapers project, which was abandoned. Some users in the community felt that Lambda’s Kodi reputation was being tarnished and that it was the right thing to do to let his legacy RIP.

Civitas is a new community project that has support from a number of addons and should have a longer life (we hope).

Some of the most common scraper modules for Kodi are Yoda and Universal Scrapers (which are used for every Jen-based addon). Civitas Scrapers is similar to these but with good universal support for all multi-source addons.

The project integrates working scrapers from all sources into a single spot so that Kodi users can find plenty of working Kodi links.

Civitas Scrapers Kodi Latest Updates

On January 21st, Civitas Scrapers were updated to v0.1.2.4. The update fixes some Cloudflare code changes that affected a handful of the scrapers. and was making them unable to return links.

Until other scraper packages update their code, you may see a reduced number of streams. If you have the 13 Clowns Kodi addon, you will have the latest version of Civitas.

The initial version of the Civitas Scrapers Kodi module works out of the box. If you want to change providers, install it using our guide below and then navigate to Program addons > press menu on Civitas > go to settings and change what you would like.

Civitas Scrapers works with any Exodus-based Kodi addon, which is any multi-source one you can think of in Kodi.

Civitas Scrapers Addons

When we hear about new addons using this community scrapers pack, we will create and update a list in this section.

The original addon for Civitas is the 13 Clowns Kodi addon. If you have 13 Clowns installed, you will see the latest version of Civitas and a bunch of working links.

How to Import Civitas Scrapers Into Any Addon

Any multi-source Kodi addon can be altered to use these new scrapers instead of its own scraper set. So for addons no longer being developed such as Placenta or Incursion, you can follow the instructions below to get things updated.

Open up the addons/script.module.incursion/lib/resources/lib/modules/sources.py file. If you don’t know how to get to your Kodi addons folder, the official Kodi foundation has a guide for each operating system. Note that the addons folder is one level up from userdata.

1) In the sources.py file, find the following line that (around line 322):

        try: sourceDict = [(i[0], i[1], control.setting('provider.' + i[0])) for i in sourceDict]

Comment out that line by adding an asterisk at the beginning like this:

        #try: sourceDict = [(i[0], i[1], control.setting('provider.' + i[0])) for i in sourceDict]

On the next line, add the following:

        try: sourceDict = [(i[0], i[1], control.addon("script.module.civitasscrapers").getSetting('provider.' + i[0])) for i in sourceDict]

Incursion will now use the provider settings stored in Civitas Scrapers instead of the provider settings stored by Incursion.

Next, open addons/plugin.video.incursion/resources/settings.xml

At the end of the settings.xml file, the last 2 lines should be:

    </category>
</settings>

How to Setup a Kodzi List

Kodzi supports the creation of a list. A list contains multiple Kodi repositories in one single file. The addon reads that file and allows you to quickly install multiple repositories fast.

To create a list, you must create a file in the following format:

kodzi-title = “Example”

kodzi-name = “Seren”, url = “nixgates.github.io”
kodzi-name = “Aura”, url = “https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=328558”

You start by giving you a file a “kodzi-title” for your list. Then, you create separate “kodzi-name” fields for each URL you want to add to your list.

Once you are done, you need to upload your list file to a URL or GitHub repository, something you can type into Kodi.

In the Kodzi Kodi addon, click the Enter Lists URL option and enter in the URL of the list you created. You can enter in https://mrkodz.github.io/repo/Example.txt as an example to install the three repositories listed above.

GitHub Clone (GC) Support

The GithubClone command allows you to clone a Github directory. Normal users shouldn’t need to clone any git, but this feature is included for those that need it.

For example: Take opensubtitles ; https://github.com/opensubtitles/service.subtitles.opensubtitles_by_opensubtitles

You can clone it by typing in the Kodzi (‘Enter Website or Github Url…..’) the following

“gc:opensubtitles/service.subtitles.opensubtitles_by_opensubtitles “

Without the (“) . Kodzi will clone and install the subtitle add-on. (If you look carefully at the git, you can see there’s a zip you can download, so if you enter the whole url, Kodzi will also find the zip).

GitHub Tree (GT) Support

Github tree allows you to find and install all the zips in the specific directory you are.

Example: https://github.com/nixgates/nixgates/tree/master/packages/plugin.video.seren (Notice the ‘tree’ in URL)

The Kodzi Github Url for that is: “gt:nixgates/nixgates/packages/plugin.video.seren” (without the [“])

This feature is there so that you can navigate to the zip folder of a Github repository manually without knowing the full URL. When you are building your list, you may prefer to add sources this way verses adding the whole URL.

Kodzi Not Working Help

If the Kodzi addon is not working for you, you’ll want to verify a few things:

First, make sure the URL you are entering in the addon actually contains a zip file inside of it. If you can enter this address into a web browser and see a clickable zip file link, it should work into Kodzi.

Make sure that you don’t have a typo in your URL address.

If you are using the GC or GT advanced techniques above, ensure that you are using the proper syntax.

• It is a good idea to switch back to the default Estuary skin before updating. Due to backend Kodi changes, all skins need to be updated for Kodi 18. Kodi 18 Skins

Note that all of the changes in Kodi 18 means that old skins are NOT compatible. This means that skin developers will need to add Kodi 18 support before you can use it. This happened back during the Kodi 16 to 17 transition as well.

If your skin is not supported with Kodi 18, you will most likely see the Kodi logo on startup and then Kodi will crash before it gets to your main menu. It is highly recommended that you change your skin back to the default Estuary before you upgrade.

The number one message we receive on social media is about Kodi not working for users. Most of the time the message is exactly as you just read it. There is no explanation or details to follow such as a specific Kodi addon, build, setting, or file that might not work. None. Simply a general message about “Kodi not working” and perhaps a follow up asking us to fix this issue.

SO.

We created a detailed information guide to solve this vague and non-detailed question. And every time someone asks us for reasons for Kodi not working, we will point them this way.

First – What IS Kodi and What ISN’T Kodi

Kodi is a free piece of media centre software. It knows how to decode and play audio and video files. These files can come from your pieces of media you own or through the use of add-ons. Kodi does not own or store any links or know what any movie or TV show is. It simply plays what is passed to it or gives an error if it doesn’t like something.

Another big point – Kodi addons don’t own any links either!

Think of Kodi addons like.a search engine to the public internet, like Google. You give the Kodi addon a title (and an episode if its a TV show) and a Kodi addon searches the internet for video files matching your query.

Therefore, if you have troubles with your Kodi not working, the blame is not on the Kodi software at all. It lies in only two spots:

1. the setup of your Kodi
2. the query you passed to the Kodi addon.

And with that, here are some of the main reasons why Kodi isn’t working for you:

Kodi Not Working – Causes and Solutions

You haven’t installed the latest version of Kodi

Kodi is an open-source media software developed and provided by the Kodi Foundation. Roughly once per year (more often in the past), Kodi releases a brand new version of the software. At a high level, new versions of Kodi have the following advantages:

• New features
• Support for the latest operating systems (Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, etc)
• Updated dependencies and backend drivers

The last two bullet points, while not as sexy as new features, are important.

Android TV hardware and operating system software go hand in hand. Each year, they are upgraded with something newer, faster, and better. Testing happens on the latest device for efficiency and older devices lose compatibility with newer operation systems. Kodi keeps up to date with the latest software because, well, that’s what all good software does. How many pieces of software are guaranteed supported with Windows 98?

Dependencies and backend drivers are perhaps the most important pieces of Kodi. Remember, Kodi is just a media player that plays whatever is passed to it. The way it displays, processes media, and handles potential bugs and error are through these dependencies.

Over time, support for old dependencies are dropped by addons (see the Windows 98 comment above) and they only support the latest version of Kodi.

A great example of this is the secure HTTP protocol (HTTPS). When you access an HTTPS website on your computer, you open up a secure communications channels that protects your privacy. For the same reason we recommend a VPN, good websites are switching over to the HTTPS protocol.

HTTPS is not supported on Kodi 16 and earlier. So immediately, if you do not use the latest version of Kodi, your multi-source addons cannot read and return streams from HTTPS websites. This largely limits the number of links and streams available to you.

When Kodi 17 was first released, it supported dependencies and protocols not available in addons yet. Addons adapted and updated to these latest dependencies and the world turned.

Some stubborn users who tried Kodi 17 when it first came out claimed it was buggy and unfinished. They are still singing this same message today!

You are doing a disservice to yourself if you use an old version of Kodi. We simply cannot help your issues of Kodi not working.

You’ve installed addons from unofficial sources

When a developer takes the time to create you a Kodi addon and a repository to store it in, they’ve meticulously tested the addon, each dependency that installs itself with the addon, and how it reacts. When you install an addon officially from a repo, you are recreating the same steps the developer took.

This maximizes the chance that you’ll get everything you need!

This point is important especially if you didn’t realize that an addon (take Exodus or any one of its forks for example) also installs modules with it that are used behind the scenes to make things run smooth.

Some other Kodi users have decided to host mirror images of addons and repositories, most likely for the hits or fame. They duplicate a repository on their own server, sometimes with no malicious intent.

The problem is, how do you know that they’ve duplicated this content correctly?

Are they hosting the latest version of the repository? of the addon?

Are all of the right modules still installing themselves?

Will you get the latest updates in the future?

The better question is, why would you take this chance?

Some examples of Kodi repositories which have incorrectly hosted addons and have caused problems in the past include: Super Repo, Kodil, Caz Wallace Repo.

Malicious intent or not aside, users who have installed the repos above are some of the first to complain and write to us about Kodi not working. Save yourself the heartache and install all of your Kodi addons the right way.

You’ve installed a build instead of installing your own addons

We’ve already posted about our distaste for installing Kodi builds so we will keep things brief.

When you install a Kodi addon, can you be 100% certain that you’ve installed only verified addons from official repositories?

Are you sure that your build hasn’t accidentally modified some backend Kodi files?

Was your build developed for your version of Kodi?

Are all of the addons on the build active and current?

Will your build auto-update or is it out of date the second you install it?

Has the build you have installed been created for Kodi 18? If you aren’t sure and you don’t know the developer, how will you find out? How will you fix what’s wrong if its not made for 18?

If the answer to any of the questions above is no or I don’t know, then how can you be sure that Kodi not working isn’t your fault? How will you be able to troubleshoot your own issues if you didn’t even install your own addons?

We understand the appeal of builds – a full complete Kodi setup with little effort involved. However, builds are infuriating for addon developers and support channels (such as us) who have to deal with complainers wrongly pointing blame at them for issues with their build.

Minimize the chances of Kodi not working for you and install your own addons today.

You are using an addon that is not developed anymore (Kodi not working)

This is a tricky point because the reality is, Kodi addons survive for a long time after they are not developed anymore. Remember that stuff we said about Kodi not hosting any content? Kodi addons run based off of a scraper and a resolver.

A scraper is a piece of code that searches a specific website on the internet that hosts media files. When you search for a title, it searches each scraper for media files that match your title.

A resolver is a piece of code that goes into the media file to extract the native video. Once Kodi has found a media file, the resolver virtually navigates through captchas and ads to present you the unfiltered video file.

Back to the original point!

The Kodi community is a volatile beast and there is a constant turnover of developers and addons. We recommend following us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.

You would be surprised how many people complain about Kodi not working and message us with help on addons such as Genesis or Elysium. These addons have not been developed in months and even though they still work functionally (for the most part), there is no support for these addons.

(Did you just read this and not know these addons were obsolete? Welcome to Kodi!)

Even worse are some of the playlist Kodi addons that have come and gone. Playlist addons require  moremanual support and upkeep from developers and are dead the second they are given up on. People still message us asking for help on Phoenix or Vidtime, both long gone and obsolete.

Before you start troubleshooting why Kodi doesn’t work for you, make sure that the addon you are using is recently updated and supported by someone in the Kodi community.

When an addon stops being developed, you don’t need to rush out and throw it to the side! Over time, those scrapers we talked about above will gradually stop working.

You are searching for content which is not available on the internet

There is a misconception that everything presented in Kodi must have a working stream available for it. Some people believe that the 1950s black and white film they are dying to see will be freely available. Or that since the Star Wars movie that comes out 2020 has a poster in one addon that a stream must be online.

Let us repeat this again:

Kodi is simply a glorified search engine.

The websites searched by Kodi addons (actually the dependencies such as URLResolver) are publicly available websites on the internet. If you can’t access a stream through a simple Google search, then your Kodi system can’t. If a website is blocked in your country because your service provider has flagged it as something malicious, Kodi can’t access it either.

You can go to Google right now and type in “Movie Name 720p MP4” for a popular movie of your choice and you’ll recognize some of the same scraper sources used by Kodi addons such as 123movies, Primewire, or Sceper.

But what about the movie posters, information, and trailers for that 50’s black and white film or the next Star Wars film?

Kodi addons use a service called TMDB (The Movie DataBase) to display this metadata nicely for you. TMDB has information and artwork for almost every movie and TV show in existence. It greatly automates the look and feel of every single Kodi setup.

When you click on a movie or TV show in Kodi, it takes the title and plugs it into a search query that returns any video file it finds on the internet. It’s not perfect – sometimes the wrong movie starts playing, the quality listed is incorrect, or you get no streams available even though you are sure there should be – but it’s close enough.

Some premium services, such as Real-Debrid or Easynews, give you access to a broader range of freely available content on the internet. If you want to increase your chance of finding that obscure title, consider one of these premium services today or put up with the strengths and weaknesses of your Kodi addons.

Before you come complaining about Kodi not working, ensure that what you are trying to watch is truly available.

Your content is blocked by your internet service provider (ISP)

Some countries have began to crackdown and ban websites that they have deemed to be “inappropriate” to users. This type of battle over whether the internet should be open to everyone or restricted at the decision of government or company is also happening all around the world.

If your internet provider has blocked access, then none of the tips in this guide will reverse that. The only way to access content open and free is to enable a VPN and point it to a country with no regulations in it.

“WHAT?! That’s going to take so much time”, I hear you say.

How much time are you going to spend beating a dead horse? If you aren’t guilty of anything else listed in this guide, perform a factory reset today.

Every time you perform an action in Kodi – install a repository or addon, load up a stream, force an update, change a setting – Kodi saves a copy of your data. Over time as things die, change, and transition, files are left dormant on your Kodi hardware.

There’s no rhyme or reason as to what or why, but these dormant files have a tendency to slow down your system. As well, they can cause issues with updates.

Another reason why a factory reset might be positive for you: URLResolver. This popular Kodi dependency is responsible for decoding file hosts and presenting you streams. It is engrained in hundreds of Kodi addons and is used as a backbone. That means that even though you no longer use that outdated addon anymore, it is intertwined with URLResolver, for better or worse.

A factory reset is not as bad as it sounds. If you have an Android TV box, simply delete the Kodi app and reinstall the program from the Google Play Store. A fresh version of Kodi will install and you’ll be free to reinstall what you need.

After doing a factory reset, consider limiting the number of addons you install on your system. Most addons perform the same or similar functionality and there’s no need for all of them installed at the same time. Keep your Kodi setup clean and fast by only installing what you actually you. You can always add more things at your leisure as the need arises later.

Seren Latest Version

The latest version of the Seren Kodi addon is v0.1.29, released on February 1st. This update comes with a huge amount of bug fixes and improvements from the initial release:

• Custom Provider module now uses Zfile module to accomodate zipfile module bug on Android devices

If in the event your Seren install becomes corrupt, I would suggest making use of the “Wipe Addon Data” feature in the tools menu and re-setup your settings.

Netflix-like Behavior

Seren’s default behavior is to scrape and find the best media source to play. It has pre-emptive scraping and autoplay enabled by default. This means that you will only ever see the scraping windows on the first episode of a show.

Seren has automatic caching for Real-Debrid and Premiumize users.

How to Install Seren Kodi Addon

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to SYSTEM > File Manager > Add Source > None
2. Type the following EXACTLY https://nixgates.github.io/packages and select Done
3. Highlight the box underneath and enter a name for this media Source like .nix and then click OK
4. Go back to your home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
5. Select Install from Zip File > .nix > nixgates.repository.zip and wait for the Add-on enabled notification
6. Select Install from Repository > Nixgates repository > Video Add-ons > Seren > Install
7. Wait for Add-on enabled notification

How to Install Seren Kodi Addon – Git Browser Method

If you don’t already have the Git Browser Kodi addon installed, click here to read our guide and then come back here and use the instructions below.

1. From your Kodi home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
2. Select My Addons > Program Add-ons > Indigo
3. Navigate to Addon Installer > Git Browser > Search By GitHub Username > **New Search**
4. Enter nixgates into the search bar and then click OK. Select nixgates.repository.zip from the list, making sure you select the highest revision of the repository.
5. After the repository has installed, click Continue when you get the popup.
6. Back out of the Indigo addon and navigate to SYSTEM > Add-ons > Install From Repository > Nixgates Repository > Video Addons > Seren > Install
7. Wait for the Add-on Enabled Notification

How to Setup the Seren Kodi Addon

When you launch the Seren Kodi addon for the first time, there is some setup and integration you will want to complete in order to ensure that you have a good experience! Follow the steps below, which have been accompanied alongside the addon install guide.

1. Launch the Seren Kodi addon.
2. Navigate to Tools > Open Settings Menu
3. Go to the Accounts tab and click on Authorize Trakt and follow the instructions on the screen.
4. Click on Enable Premiumize and Enable Real Debrid and follow the instructions to sync your accounts to the addon.
5. Go to the Providers tab and click on Install From Web URL
6. Type in https://tinyurl.com/a4kscrapers and click OK
7. A prompt will come up asking if you’d like to install the scrapers. Press Install and then press OK after they are done.
8. In the Providers tab, click on Install From Web URL
9. Type in https://tinyurl.com/lscrapers and click OK
10. A prompt will come up asking if you’d like to install the scrapers. Press Install and then press OK after they are done.

You are now ready to use and explore the Seren Kodi addon!

How to Install Up Next Kodi Addon

The Up Next Kodi addon provides a Netflix-style popup menu for automatically starting the next episodes playback in Kodi. Since Seren’s integration with Premiumize and Real-Debrid is designed to automatically queue up multiple episodes at a time, Up Next integration is a very handy feature!

To install Up Next, first install Seren using the instructions above. Then, perform these steps:

1. Navigate to SYSTEM > Add-ons > Install From Repository > Nixgates Repository > Services > Up Next > Install
2. Wait for the Add-on Enabled Notification
3. Click on the addon and click on Configure to bring open the settings screen.
4. In the Settings tab, change the Default action when nothing selected option to Don’t Play. This will stop Seren from automatically playing the next episode when you don’t select it to.
5. Enable the option to Enable on Playlist.
6. Press OK to save your settings.

Also In the Up Next Kodi addon settings, you can adjust things like how long the popup stays on your screen for, advanced presentation settings, and more!
