December 8th: Some users looking for the Terrarium TV Android App may have noticed that the official website is currently down and not working. This has led some users and Youtubers to incorrectly assume that the creator of Terrarium has run into legal problems, similar to some Kodi developers recently. The developer has posted the following message on reddit to set the record straight:

As most will know, the official TTV website is currently down, as is downloading from the github pgae. The official statement from our developer is:

“Sorry for the late response. I’m fine. I was not being arrested. I’ve decided to shut down the official website and maybe soon will also shut down the Github repository hosting the apk files in order to avoid any potential legal issues…”

There has been no cease and desist letters, no lawyers at the door, no seizing of the website. Ad free is not involved. It has been purely a precautionary measure.

“I want to take a break for a while (maybe a few weeks) first…”

Our developer has NOT said he is stopping work on the app, merely that he is taking some time out to decide what his next steps should be.

The app WILL continue working as is. New movies, shows, seasons, and episodes will continue being added as this is all automated within the app itself. There just won’t be any updates for now.

The Terrarium TV Android app is an APK that you can load onto any Android device such as a phone, tavlet, or TV Box. Is Terrarium TV Legal?

According to the Terrarium TV website, “Terrarium TV uses streaming technology instead of torrenting (P2P). Unless you share or upload videos, you’ll be ok.”.

In their terms and conditions, they state: “In case of copyright infringement, please directly contact the responsible parties or the streaming websites. Terrarium TV operates as a search engine of TV shows and movies content found publicly available on the internet, in principle conducting in the same way as Google. However, Terrarium TV strongly believes in the protection of intellectual property and would be willing to assist when possible and applicable. The videos are streamed directly from the third-party video sharing services.”

How to Install Terrarium APK

Terrarium is not available on the Google Play Store. Instead, it must be manually downloaded and sideloaded onto your device. You can also use Android software that automatically sideloads APKs for you. To install Terrarium, follow these steps:

1. From your Android home screen, navigate to Settings > Security > enable Unknown Sources.
2. Download the Terrarium APK from this link and move it onto your Android TV box.
3. Navigate to the Terrarium APK file you moved onto your box and run the file. HINT: You can download ES File Explorer from the Google Play Store to make navigating file folders easy. You can also run the APK from inside of ES File Explorer.
4. When you launch the APK, select Install. Terrarium will install and then it will appear in your apps section when it is done.

For Kodi live streaming, there are some basic tips you need to follow in order to have the best possible experience:

1. Make sure your Kodi box is hardwired into your internet via an ethernet connection. Wi-fi connections add a lot of latency, which can make live streaming impossible.
2. Use a recently updated addon. Live IPTV links are volatile and require effort to upkeep. The longer an addon has gone without an update, the more likely it is that links inside of it are dead.
3. Use acestream links whenever possible. Popular events have a lot of people trying to use the same live links, which cause heavy buffering. Acestream links shoulder the bandwidth amongst users, making a heavy link actually more effective. Acestream’s will leave your connection exposed to your ISP and other users, so put yourself behind a VPN.

The Web request failed Kodi error sometimes appears when you are trying to access live streams. This error means that Kodi has failed to read the script or video content format of the stream.

The solution to this error is very simple. You just have to enable RTMP in Kodi. To fix these errors, follow the steps below:

• Click on RTMP Input> click on Enable.

When you select a title or stream in Kodi, it searches the internet for media streams matching the title you’ve select. If it cannot find anything, you get the “stream not available” error. Most likely, you will have to try a different addon.

Also, make sure that you are running the latest version of Kodi. Version of Kodi 16 and earlier are not compatible with addons anymore due to changes in scrapers and code.

Remember, Kodi addons simply query the public internet and do not host any host any streams. Streams, especially live content, is volatile and can go up and down. There is nothing you or the developer can do about streams not working in a lot of cases.

A new fork of the URLResolver dependency called ResolveURL now provides an alternative method to resolving links from file lockers in your Kodi addons. Read more about the ResolveURL Kodi dependency here!

ResolveURL is a non-prejudice dependency resolver that decodes links from popular file locker hosts, allowing Kodi to play media from these sites. It is a fork of URLResolver that is maintained and developed by jsergio123, who is one of the best Kodi python code distributors on the internet today.

The ResolveURL Kodi add-on works in the background of Kodi (called a dependency) to decode file hosts in order to play the root movie or TV video stream. If you are new to Kodi, you probably notice that a lot of add-ons use the same filehosts – Gvideo, clicknupload, zshare, dizilab are some of the popular ones. The URLResolver Kodi add-on knows how to navigate through these hosts, clicking through captcha’s and virtually retrieving the streaming file which you see in Kodi.

How to Setup ResolveURL

In order to use the new ResolveURL dependency, addon developers will need to recode their addons to use the new dependency instead. The end user does not need to make any changes on their ends.

ResolveURL First Time Setup Important Notes

The first time an addon updates to use ResolveURL over another resolver dependency, there are a couple of very important notes you need to be aware of:

1. You may get a popup notification that says that there is a problem with URLResolver. You MUST CLICK the “Ignore” button.
2. You WILL need to reauthorize your Real-Debrid and other premium accounts to work with ResolveURL. To do that, you can find the configuration settings by navigating in Kodi to  SYSTEM > Add-ons > SYSTEM > Dependencies > ResolveURL > Configure > Universal Resolvers.

ResolveURL is automatically installed with any add-on that uses it, so you don’t have to worry about installing ResolveURL. Per jsergio, developers can add it as a dependency by adding the following code to their addons.xml file:

Are you seeing an increased number of “Update Failed” error notifications in Kodi as of late. If you want to receive the latest updates to your Kodi addons and repositories, read our guide for more information.

Lately, a number of Kodi addons and repositories have been showing the “Update Failed” error message in the corner of the screen. This error message indicates that, well, there is a new update of the Kodi addon detected but it cannot install. This can happen for a number of reasons and luckily, there are a few basic fixes we can perform.

What does the Kodi “Update Failed” Error Mean?

When you install a Kodi repository, it is really just a pointer to a set of files stored on a web server somewhere. A git source such as GitHub is a common spot for developers to store their files. These files include addons and dependencies used by the addons to make everything run automatic for you, the end user.

When Kodi automatically updates your addons or repos, it means that Kodi is detecting files available that are newer than what you have available. A failed update means that Kodi sees newer files, but something in the data between what you have and what Kodi is trying to give you does not line up.

This data mismatch can be due to a number of factors:

1. The version of the addon or repo does not line up with what you currently have installed.
2. The location of the newer files has partially changed. Kodi sees that an update is available, but cannot access the new location.
3. There is a corruption in your Kodi database.
4. There is a corruption in the repository or addon and nobody will be able to update.

Kodi “Update Failed” March 2018 Fix

Lately, a number of Kodi addons and repositories have switched locations. This has been for a number of reasons and are related to some information we’ve posted here and here.

Because of these changes, developers have been pushing new and updated versions of each repository. Because some of the dependencies and file locations have changed, you need to manually update your Kodi repository before you will receive your addon updates.

So, in order to fix this issue, you first must know which repository your failed Kodi addon update is located in. To do this:

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to Add-ons and then Video Add-ons.
2. Scroll down to the addon which is failed. Hover onto it and press the menu button (‘c’) and then select information.
3. Right underneath the addon icon will be it’s repository. Note this down.

After you know which repository is giving you issues, you need to force download the latest version. To complete these:

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to Add-ons and then Add-on Browser (open box icon).
2. Click on Install From Zip File and select the zip file of the repository you are looking for.
3. Click on the latest .zip file to force install the latest version. Even if you suspect that you might have the latest version already, force a re-install to see if your problems fix.
4. Next, click on Available Updates. Select the addon that was failing before and then click on Update.

With any luck, your Update Failed Kodi error will be gone and you will be good to go!

Kodi “Update Failed” Traditional Fix – Addons.db File

If the above fix does not apply to you, then you most likely have a corrupted database file that is preventing Kodi from updating versions to the latest. In order to fix this:

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to System > File Manager.
2. Click on Profile Directory and then Database.
3. Locate all files that are of the format AddonsXX.db where XX is a number. Hover on each file, press the menu button (‘c’) and select Delete. 
4. After you have deleted your Addons database files, Restart Kodi. 

After you restart Kodi, verify that your addons update now!

February 2nd: The Git Browser for quickly installing Kodi repositories is now available as a standalone addon to install. This means that you no longer need the Indigo addon installed in order to use the functionality! Git Browser still exists inside of Indigo for those that want to take advantage of its other features as well. Git Browser simplifies the process of installing repositories and addons for new and inexperienced users greatly, allowing you to get the best Kodi addons quicker and easier.

GitHub is a data repository website that is home to most of today’s Kodi repositories. When you install a repository for Kodi, it is really just a shell that contains links to GitHub where other files and information are stored. Most developers use GitHub to store their files because change tracking is easy, there is unlimited bandwidth, and it is a free service to use. Multiple developers can update code on a single Kodi addon in GitHub.

By installing Kodi repositories and addons with the Git Browser, there are a number of advantages:

1. Less sources in your file manager: The Kodi community can be a confusing place for inexperienced users. Since addons tend to change source addresses so often, a lot of users have a massive amount of sources in their file manager. These can include old dead sources which do nothing but slow Kodi down. By using the method below, you no longer need to add sources to your file manager. Conversely, Kodi developers don’t need to find a .com source to host their repo any more.
2. No need to remember repository.com sources: Instead of remembering sources, which tend to change a lot, you now just need to know a developer’s GitHub username.
3. Addon developers have more freedom: Lots of addon developers choose to combine forces so that users only have to install one source in their file manager. This method allows developers to use GitHub (which most are using anyway) freely on their own. Installing repos by GitHub username will make it easier for developers to distribute their addons.

Users should also be aware that using Git Browser also has some disadvantages as well:

• You have to install Indigo, which has some usefulness in a variety of areas, but not all users may want the full addon.
• When you install Indigo, you will be bombarded with a popup each time you start Kodi. This popup is easy to dismiss, but it can be annoying seeing an advertisement for TVAddons every time. You CAN disable this popup in the Indigo addons by clicking the “opt out” option for popups.
• Not all Kodi repositories are stored on GitHub. We will do our best in our guides to list which ones are available and which aren’t.
• If you choose to install just the addon after searching with the GitHub Browser and not the full repository, the repo will not install and addons will not auto-update unless the addon has the repo listed as a dependency. This is an option that developers can choose to imlement. This is not the fault of Git Browser, but standard to all Kodi addons. Always make sure you are installing the repository only.

There is some misinformation about Indigo possibly performing malicious code, installing, or uninstalling other addons currently, which is simply not true.

Git Browser TIPS: 

1. Please ensure that you have the latest version of Kodi when you are using the Git Browser.
2. Please make sure that you are installing the REPOSITORY only to ensure that you get all future updates. These filenames are always in the format repository.NAME-x-x-x.zip. Do not install the plugin.video.NAME zip files as this will not get you auto-updates in the future.

If you want to install Kodi addons and repositories quicker and easier, you must first have the Indigo Kodi plugin installed.

If you already have Indigo installed, skip to the second header below.

How to Install Git Browser Kodi Addon

ON Kodi 17 Krypton & 18 Leia Only: From the main menu, navigate to Settings > System Settings > Add-ons > Turn On Unknown Sources > Click Yes.

1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to SYSTEM > File Manager > Add Source > None
2. Type the following EXACTLY http://fusion.tvaddons.co and select Done
3. Highlight the box underneath and enter a name for this media Source like “tva”. and then click OK
4. Go back to your home screen.
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
5. Select Install from Zip File > “tva” > kodi-repos > repository.xbmchub-x.x.x.zip and wait for the Add-on enabled notification
6. Select Install from Repository > TVAddons.co repository > Services > Git Browser > Install
7. Wait for Add-on enabled notification

The Git Browser Kodi addon will now be found in your Program addons area.

How to Quickly Install Kodi Addons & Repositories with the Git Browser

1. Launch the Git Browser Add-on from your Program Addons page, click on Addon Installer > Click on Git Browser
2. Select Search By GitHub Username.
3. Enter in the GitHub username for the Kodi repo you would like to install. If you aren’t sure, check out our top Kodi addons post. We are also working on providing this information in all of the guides on our site. When you are done, click Enter.
4. If everything worked correctly, you will now see a complete listing of all Kodi addons and repositories from that username. Look for repository.username-x.x.x.zip where:
   1. username = the name of the repository you want to install.
   2. x-x-x = the latest version. Sometimes old versions of the Repo will appear in this list if they haven’t been deleted by the developer. Always install the latest version (highest number).
5. After clicking on the repo, it should install just like normal!

And that’s it! You have just installed the Kodi Repository directly from GitHub. If you want to install addons from that Repo, you can follow the normal process as follows:

1. From your Kodi home screen:
   • ON Kodi 17 Krypton or later: Select Add-ons > Add-on Browser 
   • ON Kodi 16 or earlier: Select SYSTEM > Add-Ons
2. Select Install from Repository and find the Repository you installed above. Navigate into Video Addons to see all of the addons in the repo.

The official Kodi 18 download isn’t available for public release yet, but the nightly alpha previews give a good sign of what new features are coming to the popular media center software.

March 5th: The Kodi Foundation has announced that Kodi 18 Leia is now available in Alpha release format! Alpha release is still pre beta and should not be installed on your main Kodi system. However, it is also an important step because it means that the team is willing to publicize its release in order to drive more users to test out the new update. Check out the Kodi 18 download information at the bottom of the post.

Kodi 18 Leia has the following technical changes completed:

• More than 6140 (code chunks changed)
• More than 1911 pull-requests (collection of commits that were included in one go)
• More than 7776 changed files
• More than 350.000 code lines removed
• More than 397.000 code lines added
• Over 35 opensource developers
• A lot of free time developing and testing these changes

Much of the work in Kodi 18 Leia has been to standardize the backend code, which should mean less errors and better video processing for everyone! Some of the other features noted in this Kodi 18 download:

• Revamped music library to read metadata instead of just file name.
• Live TV overhaul – Need a USB or network tuner such as HDHomeRun.
• Xbox One Support
• More standardized Android code: Now includes leanback search integration and Google Assistant voice integration
• Better remote and controller support
• Revamped video player support
• Digital Rights Management (DRM) support for login and subscription based DRM services.

Note that all of the changes in Kodi 18 means that old skins are NOT compatible. This means that skin developers will need to add Kodi 18 support before you can use it. This happened back during the Kodi 16 to 17 transition as well.

If your skin is not supported with Kodi 18, you will most likely see the Kodi logo on startup and then Kodi will crash before it gets to your main menu. It is highly recommended that you change your skin back to the default Estuary before you upgrade.

Now that Kodi 17.6 is released as the last version of Krypton, it’s time to turn our attention to the Kodi 18 Download, code name Leia. The official release won’t be coming until 2018 sometime, but there are nightly alpha builds available on the Kodi website for those users who want to help with development or get an early taste of new features.

Here are some of the new features coming in Kodi 18 Leia that have us really excited:

• Libretro API added for full game client support. Libretro is the most popular backend for classic game emulators and inclusion into Kodi will open up a whole world of users who can emulate old games within the Kodi interface. Setup can be tricky for beginner users, so we are interested to see how each setup is on Kodi, particularly getting your game controllers (including Playstation and Xbox) to work.
• Improvements to nearly all backend PVR clients supported by Kodi including FilmOn, HDHomeRun ArgusTV, and others. This should mean better menus, feel, and look for viewing live TV channels via an over-the-air tuner.
• Improvements made to Inputstream clients, which improve network streaming protocols. This should hopefully open the door to creating native Kodi addons for online streaming services such as Sling TV, Youtube TV, and other live IPTV sources.
• Better Bluetooth support. This should allow controllers, remotes, keyboard, mouse, and other accessories better access to control Kodi.
• Speech-to-text and recommendations support on Android TV. This should allow Kodi to better integrate into the Android backend and be included in the recommendation tiles that come standard on newer Android devices (such as the nVidia Shield).
• Improved Python based  web scraper support.

Once again, installing the Kodi 18 Download is NOT recommended on your main Kodi box. It is considered to be in alpha stage and there are still bugs to work out.

When your library is configured, the “Movies” and “TV Shows” sections of the default Kodi skin become much more powerful. As you can see below, the TV Shows area shows all my unwatched shows, as well as content sorted by genre, TV network, year, actors, tags, recently added, and more.

When new episodes of a TV show air, your Library Kodi integration will auto-update and show you new episodes.

Instead of manually searching within Kodi addons like Covenant, library integration brings everything right to your main menu, saving you button clicks and time.

Library Kodi Setup Part 1 – General Settings

The first thing we need to do in order to setup library integration within Kodi is setup a few settings in the Kodi settings area.

1. Before we can sync your Kodi library to the Covenant library paths, you need to enable the showing of hidden files in Kodi.
   1. From the Kodi main menu, navigate to Settings (Gear Icon)
   2. Click on Media Settings
   3. Click General
   4. Show hidden files and directories and make sure it is enabled.
2. Back in your main menu under Movies on the left, you’ll get the message below because you have not synced your Kodi library to the Covenant media paths you saw in step 2.
   1. Click on Enter Files Section to enter Kodi’s path for library folders.
3. Click Add Videos… > Browse and navigate to the Movies folder contained within the addon’s userdata folder for the addon you want to add library integration for.
   1. On Android for most users, you can navigate to External Storage > Android > data > org.xbmc.kodi > files > .kodi > userdata > addon_data > plugin.video.INSERTADDONNAMEHERE > Movies. You should see folders for the movies you added above in step 4. Click OK.
      1. On Windows, you can find the userdata folder via: Start – type %APPDATA%\kodi\userdata – press <Enter>
      2. On Mac, the userdata folder is located in /Users/<your_user_name>/Library/Application Support/Kodi/userdata/
      3. On OpenELEC/LibreELEC, it is /storage/.kodi/userdata/
4. In the next screen, select This Directory Contains and select Movies. Under Choose Information Provider, select The Movie Database. This is the location where all the metadata such as genre, network, and year are grabbed from.
5. Go back to your main menu and under TV Shows on the left, click on Enter Files Section.
6. Click Add Videos… > Browse and navigate to the TV Shows folder contained within the addon’s userdata folder for the addon you want to add library integration for. Use the guide in step 3 above if you forgot where your folder is located.
7. In the next screen, select This Directory Contains and select TV Shows. Under Choose Information Provider, select The TVDB. This is the location where all the metadata such as genre, network, and year are grabbed from.

Library Kodi Setup Guide Part 2 – Specific Addon Setup

Next we have to configure our Kodi addons for library integration. The steps below work for any of the addons listed above.

1. First, open up your addon settings. Find your addon in your My Add-ons > Video Addons area and long press on it or click menu and then click Settings.
2. Navigate to the Library tab on the left.
3. On the right side, note the path of the Movies and TV library locations. They SHOULD be the same as the path you just added to Kodi above. If they are different, you will want to update them. When you add media to your library, movies automatically store into the Movies folder and TV Shows store in the TV folder.
4. Below your folder paths, this screen also has a bunch of other options you may want to enable or disable. We left all options as default during our testing.
   • Auto update TV Shows = Automatically loads new episodes into your TV folder above.
   • Show notifications during update = Notifies you via pop up in the corner of the screen whenever new shows are added.
   • Update library after adding content = Automatically refreshes your library after new content is added.
   • Avoid creating duplicate content = When enabled, commands will be ignored if you try to add media you already have in your library.
   • Check movie before adding it = Makes sure that sources exist in Covenant before adding the movie to your library.
   • Check first episode of season before adding it = Makes sure that sources exist in Covenant before adding TV shows to your library.
   • Include episodes with unknown air dates = Ensures that all TV episodes are added to your library, even if metadata is missing.
     
5. To add media to your Kodi library, simply hover on any title within the addon and long press (or press menu) and select Add to Library. Pointers to this content are added into the library folders you configured above. Go ahead and add the movies and TV shows you like so that you are sure content is available for the next steps in our Covenant Library Kodi setup guide.
   

And that’s it! In the main menu of Kodi under the Movies and TV Shows section, you’ll now see that your Library Integration is now synced into Kodi.

If you want to force library updates in Kodi, simply go into the Title section under Categories, long press (or press menu) on a title, and choose Scan For New Content.

“Sorry for the late response. I’m fine. I was not being arrested. I’ve decided to shut down the official website and maybe soon will also shut down the Github repository hosting the apk files in order to avoid any potential legal issues…”

There has been no cease and desist letters, no lawyers at the door, no seizing of the website. Ad free is not involved. It has been purely a precautionary measure.

How to Install Terrarium APK

Terrarium is not available on the Google Play Store. Instead, it must be manually downloaded and sideloaded onto your device. You can also use Android software that automatically sideloads APKs for you. To install Terrarium, follow these steps:

1. From your Android home screen, navigate to Settings > Security > enable Unknown Sources.
2. Download the Terrarium APK from this link and move it onto your Android TV box.
3. Navigate to the Terrarium APK file you moved onto your box and run the file. HINT: You can download ES File Explorer from the Google Play Store to make navigating file folders easy. You can also run the APK from inside of ES File Explorer.

An official release by Alluc today has notified its followers that they are shutting down to “take a break and focus on other projects”. Alluc is a popular media website that provides movie and TV metadata as well as hosted links for the public.

The Alluc API is integrated into all multi-source Kodi addons today and the news of them going offline will remove a popular scraper from Kodi addons.

They provide metadata, media, information, and a whole lot of content to comb through, but how do Kodi addons work and what are the good ones? Read our Kodi addons guide below for a full breakdown and learning session of third-party content.

Kodi is a media center that knows how to decode and play video files passed to it either locally or through the use of third-party Kodi addons. But how do these addons work? How are they the same and different from each other? What components do they have? This guide is meant to simplify and answer all of these questions.

So, whether you are a Kodi expert or a beginner looking to understand the basics, buckle in and lets have a look.

1) How Are Kodi Addons Created?

For those of you who know nothing about computer programming and imagine Kodi addons to be full pages of unreadable text in a word file, you are mostly right. You might picture a programmer around the world locked in his mom’s basement in front of a computer, jamming keys on his keyboard for days on end in order to come up with his masterful all-in-one addon. This is where you are wrong!

Addons are a collection of one or more files written in Python computer code, a common open-source language. Open-source means that the Python code is not packaged and compiled into unreadable machine language code. In fact, there is no packaging required with Python code. If you know where a Kodi addon is located, you can view the code for yourself. You can read, learn, copy, and understand the code with nothing else but time.

99.9% of Kodi addons are not created from scratch. Because they are open-soource, the leg work coding only had to be done once. Now anybody can take that code, reuse part or most of it, add their own icons and name, and release their own third-party addon.

TV & movie companies who have been targeting addon creators with cease and desist letters would have you believe that the code in each addon is home to pirated content, forcing itself upon users and destroying the profits of multi-billion dollar conglomerates. The truth is, the code behind each addon accomplishes a few basic tasks:

• Reads and writes data to other official and unofficial Kodi modules called dependencies (more on those later)
• Directs Kodi on how to visually present and pass around movie and TV show metadata. This is commonly done one of two ways: Automatically through an API such as TMDB (more on that later too) or manually through an XML file created by the Kodi developer (and that as well)!
• Defines what options are available in the “Settings” of the addon.

This is slightly over-simplified but you’d be surprised. Kodi addons are simply a shell of instructions on how to display information on your Kodi software. The right dependencies working in the background provide content for users and luckily, most of these are well-developed and maintained as well.

2) Kodi Dependencies Overview: Scrapers

Kodi scrapers pieces of code (Python!) that visually scrape a website looking for media links to file locker hosting websites which make up the majority of TV or movie files hosted today. They look through the source code of the website, pulling out media file URL addresses and quickly processing metadata like the title and quality from the filename.

You may have heard of websites such as OneClickMoviez, Alluc, Popcorn Flix, Sceper, or RlsBB. These are current or former websites that have Kodi scrapers created for them.

Traditionally, scraper files were included with each addon, such as Exodus. Whens scraper files were updated, added, or removed, the addon version would update and it would update the next time you started Kodi.

As things have developed over time, scrapers now generally sit as their own separate dependency. Two common scraper packages are NaN Scrapers (now obsolete) and Universal Scrapers. By keeping them as a package, anybody can update the code and things will update for ALL addons which use those scrapers.

In summary, Kodis scrapers search through websites that host media files and pick out those URL addresses. These websites are not owned or affiliated with any Kodi developers. Kodi addons utilize scrapers to pull in and find media links of content when called upon.

3) Kodi Dependencies Overview: Resolvers

Kodi resolvers are pieces of code (Python AGAIN, whoo!) that visually decode file locker hosting websites in order to get to the raw .mp4 or .avi video file. They manually navigate through ads, 10 second countdowns, captcha problems, and other tactics used to disguise links on these websites so that you click on an advertisement if you were to visit the link on your computer.

File locker websites use these sneaky tactics because they rely on advertising revenue to pay for server costs. HD media files take up hundreds of megabytes of space. The reason why some Kodi links have a “pairing process” is because some more reliable free file hosts once threatened to block Kodi or shut down completely if they didn’t get more advertising revenue to pay for their expenses. The pairing process takes you back to these websites on your phone/computer, where you have to manually navigate.

You may have heard of such websites as Openload, File Factory, Vidzi, TheVideo, or Gvideo. These are file lockers that have had Kodi resolvers built for them.

Resolvers sit in on their own so that they can be updated universally once and be updated in every addon that calls on it. Two popular resolver sets are URLResolver (the original) and ResolveURL (a newer fork). Kodi resolver files don’t care or know what specific media file it is decoding. It doesn’t know what a movie or TV show is. It’s job is to search the file locker, find the raw media file, and pass this to Kodi for playing.

4) Tying Scrapers & Resolvers Together into Kodi Addons

So you now know what scrapers and resolvers are – so what? Well whether you realize it yet or not, you now know how Kodi addons work and pull links. Pretty much every single Kodi addon available today uses the same scrapers + resolvers to play content. Why reinvent the wheel when the frame is solid already?

Being that most Kodi addons use the same scrapers and resolvers, this means that there is not as much variation in available content across each addon as you might think. If you are looking for an old episode of Seinfeld and Covenant doesn’t have it, you may think that Neptune Rising may have an untapped well full of working HD links for you. Surprise, surprise, you are wrong!

Once again, giant media conglomerates would have you believe that each Kodi addon is a cesspool of illegal content and media.  Kodi addons are all using the same scraper websites for links. This is the case for 95% of addons. In fact, the only addons that don’t use this framework are:

1. Torrent addons such as Elementum – Rather than using traditional scrapers and resolvers, torrent-based addons scan peer-to-peer torrent trackers for content. Torrent content is stored quickly among users and is generally safe if you are hiding behind a VPN, which makes it a popular alternative for content in Kodi.
2. Usenet addons such as Easynews – Premium usenet servers have been around since before scraper sites and torrent files. They are servers stored anonymously around that world that require a custom username and password in order to access. Usenet servers store everything indefinitely and due to their encryption, links are hardly ever removed. This means that Easynews has some old and more obscure content in them as long as one person has uploaded it to the server at one point in time.

5) Multi-Source Addons vs Playlist Addons

So if all Kodi content is pulled from other sources on the internet and decoded from the file locker, why are there so many Kodi addons? Truth is, there are only two styles of Kodi addons; multi-source and playlist. After that, the only difference is the presentation and how the menus are laid out.

Multi-source Kodi addons are ones such as Incursion, Neptune Rising, Uranus, Placenta, or Covenant (Exodus and Genesis before that). They use automated metadata service such as TMDB to place the navigation menus in front of you. Metadata services are giant databases filled with TV and movie information such as title, genre, cast, plot, and more. They also store playlists such as Network Watching, Most Popular, Latest HD, Airing Today, or Trending. If you see these playlists in your Kodi addons, it’s a giveaway that a metadata service is automatically pulling in this data.

In a multi-source addon, when you navigate through each playlist and eventually pick content by title, the scraper dependency is called. Each scraper website is quickly scanned for file addresses which match the title you have picked. All results found are given to you in a list.

When you move through your scraper list and pick a link hosted on a file locker website, the resolver dependency is called. The resolver is decoded, the raw media file is passed to Kodi, and it begins to play for you.

Playlist Addons

The main difference in playlist Kodi addons verses the multi-source variety is that the menus and playlists are not auto-gathered from a metadata service. The Kodi “developer” has created something called an XML file which outlines the folders and links in the addon. If the dev feels like making a “top love movies of 2008 starring directors with an “I” in their name” they can do that for everyone to enjoy.

In the past, developers also had to manually find their own file locker links from scraper websites and paste that into their XML file. Nowadays, playlist addons easily integrate with Universal Scrapers and selecting a movie or show is no different than using Exodus with auto-play enabled.

6) How Do Live IPTV Addons Work?

Okay, so you have a good understanding about traditional movie + TV addons, but what about those live stream IPTV ones? Like other addons, live IPTV Kodi contains a scraper and a resolver as well and the definition of each is the same. A scraper searches through a website that presents live IPTV links or embedded streams and a resolver decodes a file locker video in order to grab the raw media file.

SportsDevil

The most popular set of scrapers for live IPTV on Kodi is actually the SportsDevil addon, which contains scrapers for 10+ common streaming websites. You may have heard of some of these sites, including Firstrowsports and stream2watch. Many live IPTV Kodi addons use SportsDevil as a dependency and just rearrange or present links from it in different ways.

Like URLResolver, there is also a Live Resolver dependency for Kodi. It isn’t maintained to the same level as the movie + TV equivalent and is not in active development, but its job is the same!

We admire and respect all Kodi developers who have taken the time to add code or create custom XML files for the world to enjoy. However, hopefully the guide above helps you understand that Kodi addons aren’t that wildly different from one another. The same backbone is used in most and the only consideration is whether that addon’s playlists fit your style and niches or not.

For the reasons in the guide above, this is also a reason why you don’t need 50+ addons in that Kodi build of yours. ResolveURL is a non-prejudice dependency resolver that decodes links from popular file locker hosts, allowing Kodi to play media from these sites. It is a fork of URLResolver that is maintained and developed by jsergio123, who is one of the best Kodi python code distributors on the internet today.

The ResolveURL Kodi add-on works in the background of Kodi (called a dependency) to decode file hosts in order to play the root movie or TV video stream. If you are new to Kodi, you probably notice that a lot of add-ons use the same filehosts – Gvideo, clicknupload, zshare, dizilab are some of the popular ones. The URLResolver Kodi add-on knows how to navigate through these hosts, clicking through captcha’s and virtually retrieving the streaming file which you see in Kodi.

How to Setup ResolveURL

In order to use the new ResolveURL dependency, addon developers will need to recode their addons to use the new dependency instead. The end user does not need to make any changes on their ends.

ResolveURL First Time Setup Important Notes

The first time an addon updates to use ResolveURL over another resolver dependency, there are a couple of very important notes you need to be aware of:

1. You may get a popup notification that says that there is a problem with URLResolver. You MUST CLICK the “Ignore” button.
2. You WILL need to reauthorize your Real-Debrid and other premium accounts to work with ResolveURL. To do that, you can find the configuration settings by navigating in Kodi to  SYSTEM > Add-ons > SYSTEM > Dependencies > ResolveURL > Configure > Universal Resolvers.

ResolveURL is automatically installed with any add-on that uses it, so you don’t have to worry about installing ResolveURL. Per jsergio, developers can add it as a dependency by adding the following code to their addons.xml file:
